2003-09-17 - 12:58 a.m. Hockey Skates So, I did it. I went and played hockey. I finally got to use the the hockey gear I bought two years. (If I look I could probably find the entry where I did that) It's always a little bit strange going some place for the very first time. I've never really played scrub hockey before. Two years ago, I was sharing practice time with some fire fighters. I was also attending with a friend of mine who plays goal. So, this was a bit of a new experience. Anyway, I found the dressing room and got into my gear. Making my way to the ice. I had arrived right at the ice time start so by the time I was making my way out, they had already started playing. My arrival actually made an odd man count. As is typical with a new male joining another group of males not much was said to me. This sort of thing doesn't bother me. Like any group of people there's a bit of a pecking order so best not to say much and work my way into the group slowly. I am sure as I play more over the winter I will see a lot of the same faces and I'll get to know them. One thing I knew for sure I was going to suck and suck BAD. As I mentioned before I haven't played for two years. I just wanted to get out and get some excersize because I knew A) My Conditioning is terrible and B) My timing would be totally off. I didn't disappoint myself. I went up and down the ice a couple times and immediately was winded. They might not have liked having an extra player but I sure apperciated it. I went about 10-15 Max at anyone time on the ice. I could barely get my breath back a couple of times. I am sure to these other guys I looked pretty sad. I missed lots passes and people just skated past me like I was a pilon. I got two actual shots on net. One actually went in but that was at the end of the ice time so the goalie was probably pretty tired. I was the world's worst floater. (Meaning I spent a lot of time skating between the two blue lines and rarely going in deep into either zone.) Anyway, The time went quickly. I survived and didn't die. I was happy that I didn't have the major headaches that I had two years ago when I played. My back wasn't too bad and my right knee was only mildly sore instead of aching like it can get sometimes. Back in the locker room of the older guys made a comment about all my new gear. After I told him about the gear he commented on my skates. Ah, My Poor Skates. My Skates were actually once my Dad's and they didn't get a lot of use by him. He bought them when I started hockey at 8 years old. I'm 33 now, so I'll leave you to do the math. On my way out of the arena another guy introduced himself and ALSO mentioned my skates. My poor skates. He told me he might know someone who had some used skates I could buy. I told him, these ones were doing me fine for now. I'm just playing pick up hockey not in a league. Anyway, I'm just happy with myself for getting off my ass and actually going. I was glad I didn't push myself too hard and I'm not concerned if everyone else thinks I suck. As the season goes on my conditioning will come back to me and even sooner before then my timing will return. Then I'll probably suck just not as bad.
