Something I've Been Meaning to Say...

I haven't updated in 4 or 5 days. That's my average according to RoadiePig.

As you may or may not remember I went to visit my parents a little while ago. I went because I got a very foreboding phone call from my oldest sister regarding my mother. I then called my parents and talked to a very upbeat father. I was confused so I decided to trek there to see what exactly what was going on.

On a side note, I think one of the reasons I've been slow in telling this story here is because I've had to tell so many people because they all asked once I returned. It was nice to see some concern from co-workers, friends, and aquaintences.

Well, it turns out my mother's lung cancer is terminal. The doctors guesstimated she probably had less than a year. She told me this while my dad was having a smoke out on the back porch. (He's been very good about smoking outside because of my mom's health) She told me while he was outside because she hadn't told him yet. This explained why my dad was quite upbeat when I phoned a few days prior.

Now before you go leaping up and down about the fact my mom had told us kids before she told my dad let me defend her logic. I really do see her point. My dad himself has been dealing with cancer. Skin Cancer. His prognosis, of course, is much better but he's in the midst of the surgeries. Currently the reconstructive plastic surgeries on his face. When my mom previously went into the hospital with pneumonia just before all the lung cancer knowledge came to light my father did not take things very well. Outwardly, My father is a very happy, jovial kind of person. What he hides (and I do the same damn things) is his wide range of emotions. He got very depressed, whether he wants to admit it or not, about my mom situation. Now, she's recovered from that only to find out that there's a bigger problem. I can completely understand her trepidation in telling him this news. As I may have mention in other entries, my parents are long time friends having known each other since they were teenagers. I've always known that the death of one would be an incredible loss to other. I am sure both of them are even more acutely aware of that.

Anyway, She had planned on telling him after the second (and last) major plastic surgery. She didn't want him to not go or something. Unfortunately, his second surgery was bumped to the end of this month. My mom told me she was still going to tell him about the time that the second surgery should have happened.

She should have told him by now. I will be returning to see them later this week. I'm on holidays and I'll be headed to their area to see a concert with The Chick. I think my dad wants to go to the track and bet on the ponies. So, if I can manage to swing that I'll go do that.
