2004-08-16 - 2:00 a.m. Late for the Party To completely explain I guess I have to start this entry with a couple of confessions. First, I downloaded some movies off the net. (Nope, Not Porno, Sorry [Insert YOUR Name Here]) I know that's bad and wrong because I'm taking Caviar out of the mouth of Stephen Spielberg but I also just started collecting PAID for DVD's too. So, you could say that my access to more movies created a desire to own movies (which is something I never had before) [We Interrupt this Entry to Rant...] What exactly is the point of the "Don't Download Movies off the Internet" Ad Campaign they are show prior to movies in the theatre. It really makes me wonder. A] Why are they bothering me with this shit because I just paid a king's ransom to sit in a theatre and watch the movie. B] Hey! Thanks for letting me know I could have downloaded this piece of crap you're passing off as a film/entertainment for free off of the internet instead of putting a second mortgage on my house to watch it in the theatre! C] I Tuned Out as soon as the Commercials started just like I do at home when a TV Show goes to Commercials. Now I have my internal sensor waiting for the blasting music and the words "And Now Our Feature Presentation." Like any bloated over paid profession (Also See Professional Sports) it seems their heads are so far up their ass that they think the general public is stupid lemmings and can be lead by "Just Say No" type advertising. Didn't they look and realize that this approach didn't work for the anti-drug campaign. Which leads one to ask why in the hell would it work for something that CAN'T even kill you?! [End of Rant...and remember you really should pay for movies and music] Second, One of those movies I downloaded was "The Girl Next Door" which was suprisingly watchable. It was funny and cute/romantic in the right places and although it was flawed (like the mass majority of Hollywood Films) it was still enjoyable. Third, I love music. Anyway, the point of these confessions is that I often find new songs I like listening to when I hear them used in a film. This film had one of those songs. So, I went and looked up the songs used in the film. It introduced me to Elliott Smith. I'm sure others have already heard of him. I downloaded the song so I could hear it in it's entirety. I quite like it so I downloaded some more of his songs so I could see if I liked anything else and was impressed by a number of other tracks. I then wanted to know who this guy was so I looked him up on VH1 and found out he had died not that long ago. This is so disappointing to discover a new artist only to find out their career was cut short by a tragic death. This isn't the first time this has happened to me. It also happened to me when I discovered Jeff Buckley via the Vanilla Sky Soundtrack. Seems I'm just the one who's always late to the party.
