Cover Tunes

Yesterday, I was doing a search via Google to confirm that Talk Talk was the original band to do "It's My Life" currently being covered by No Doubt.

I managed to wander by a site (although I never made a note of where) that had a number of people putting down No Doubt's version of the song. In my humble opinion, I'd have to disagree, it's actually not that bad.

Their version stick pretty close to the original and it comes off really well. Although, This song made me start to think there's a whole lot of cover tunes happening these days.

The more I thought about it the more songs that came to mind.

  1. "The First Cut Is The Deepest" - Sheryl Crow (Cat Stevens)

  2. "Is She Really Going Out With Him" - Sugar Ray (Joe Jackson)

  3. "Drift Away" - Uncle Cracker (Dobie Gray)

  4. "Baker Street" - Foo Fighters (Gerry Rafferty)

  5. "Smooth Criminal" - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)

  6. "Tainted Love" - Marilyn Manson (Soft Cell)

  7. "Sweet Dreams" - Marilyn Manson (Eurthymics)

  8. "I Love Rock'n'Roll" - Britney Spears (Joan Jett)

  9. "American Pie" - Madonna (Don Maclean)

  10. "Cars" - Fear Factory (Gary Numan)

  11. "Lay Lady Lay" - Ministry (Bob Dylan)

  12. "Painted Black" Tea Party (Rolling Stones)

This list could go on and on.

My personal opinion to cover tunes is "Proceed With Caution". Rarely, does one band do justice to another bands tune. Even more so, it's just wrong to touch a classic such as Madonna learned with "American Pie". The Foo Fighters managed to pull off "Baker Street" which had you said it to me before they did it I would have said "Please, God, NO!"

Occasionally a tune is covered and improved upon as I feel Alien Ant Farm did with "Smooth Criminal" . The Heavier Guitar just adds to the song although I think sometimes this attests to the original song writers own talent. (You can't argue in those days MJ was very much on his game, the present day MJ is a completely different story.)

Although, I'm sure there are some (The Purists) that would disagree with me. Although, Music in general is always open to debate. One person's KICK ASS is the next man's SUCK ASS, so the debate will rage on.

It all comes down to alligences really. If you are completely into a certain band then no other band could EVER "cover" their tunes and be the same. Although, It defies logic that one band could be the same as another with the small exception of bands like Split Enz and Crowded House, only because they're basically the same members in each band.

Cover Tunes. We'll always have them because really they are a form of flattery. A Tip of the Hat to those that came before and how they influenced or just created something "cool" enough that someone else actually wants to perform it.
